An hour with David McBride inside his ‘tough’ Canberra prison

David McBride, a former army lawyer, in the visitation area at the Alexander Maconochie Centre in Canberra. McBride was jailed for leaking documents to the ABC that contained allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan. If he serves his full sentence, he’ll be out in January 2030.

From his new home in Canberra’s Alexander Maconochie Centre, nestled between native grassland reserves and the New South Wales border, David McBride has been looking for inspiration in Super Bowl stories on the prison television.

The 60-year-old believes he’s in a Super Bowl of his own and that his time in jail is just the halftime period.

“Yesterday, there was a story about a quarterback with one eye. He stabbed a fork in his eye as a kid and he could only see out of one eye, and he still made it,” McBride says.
